Simon Wachsmuth
Aporia/Europa
The construction and reconstruction of history are central themes in the work of artist Simon Wachsmuth, who lives in Berlin. In the Galerie im Taxispalais, Wachsmuth will be showing the cycle of works Fehlstellen as well as an excerpt from his video Parabase developed for the 11th Istanbul Biennial in 2009.
In Fehlstellen, a series of paintings dating from 2008 -2010, Simon Wachsmuth reverts to a work of European art history. He focuses on places destroyed by time and circumstances in the cycle of frescoes The Legend of the True Cross in Arezzo (1447-1466), a key work by Piero della Francesca and of the Renaissance. By painting the missing sections onto canvas, he creates an abstract cartography highlighting the gaps and interpretations in European history-writing. Supplementary photographs and newspaper cuttings link historical events and territorial issues from Piero della Francesca’s frescoes to the current discussion of EU borders and Turkey’s planned entry into the EU.
